My personal weekend project
Important: This prototype is not related to GovTech.
About TraceTogether
The TraceTogether Programme is a programme to enhance Singapore’s contact tracing efforts, in the fight against COVID-19. It comprises the TraceTogether App and TraceTogether Token.
Reimaging our daily app
I salute the frontline peeps for the quick turnaround, creating the TraceTogether app and the entire backend.
Few months after using the app and observing the users around me, I thought to myself, how would I have designed the app for better user experience?
Often, I noticed a larger percentage of crowd scanning the QR code’s were seniors.
Second, I barely see anyone checking out by scanning the QR code when exiting malls.
Key Objectives
- Quicker check-in.
- Encourage check out
Design philosophy
User Interface Design should be a continual process. Learning of user behaviour and applying them into the design to solve problems.
- An app should be straightforward and clear.
- User experience to align with the organisation’s goals to drive usage.
- Minimum taps to reach the destination.
Balancing aesthetics and practicality
Colours
- Bright colours: Easily catch the attention
- Colourblindness: High contrast to make it highly legible
- Workflow: Design should fit into the existing workflow without retraining security counters or business/shop managers.
E.g. Green = Successful check-in, Blue = Successful check-out.
Fonts
- San Francisco, Roboto: System fonts for quick app launching.
- Dynamic text: Adjustable text size
Design considerations
- User-centric: Both the mobile phone users and the guardians of our shopping malls! =p
- Accessibility: Making it friendlier for a wider group of users (our seniors)
- Existing habits: Lesser learning curve.
A design process should always be collaborative for a better product.
What do you think of this new mobile app design?
